Palangkaraya, formerly Palangkaraja, is a place on Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo.
Palangkaraya or honored and sacred great place, is the capital of Central Kalimantan. Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, grew up out of Pahandut, a small stilt village on the banks of the Kahayan River, and decided it would become the next location of Indonesia’s capital. The new city was completely redesigned and built in large proportions in the 1960s.
